The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, also known as the DHR or Toy Train, is a  narrow-gaugerailway based on Zig Zag and loop-line technology.which runs between New Jalpaiguri & Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. Built between 1879 and 1881, with six zig-zags and five loops, the railway is about 88 km (55 mi) long.

This joy ride begins at New Jalpaiguri, a busy railway station in the plains. Where else can you find a small steam engine pulling mini coaches up the steep mountains through breathtaking landscapes and overcoming almost impossible curves and gradients using sheer engineering ingenuity and creative skills. The snail pace at which the train moves through the hilly terrain is at times so slow that you can often see the local school children hopping on and off the train on the move.

 Train Reservations

Reservations for travel on the toy train (both daily services and joyrides) can be made at Indian Railways computerized reservation counters, or  Travel Time Tours - Kurukshetra can book your Tickets.  It's advisable to book in advance, as the trains fill up quickly.
